Shamshad Begum (14 April 1919 – 23 April 2013) was an Indian singer whose career spanned seven decades. She began recording in the late 1930s and became one of the leading playback voices for Hindi cinema during the 1940s and 1950s. Her clear, high-pitched timbre suited both light film songs and classical-based pieces, and she contributed to the soundtracks of numerous landmark films. Beyond cinema, Begum recorded extensively in the ghazal and qawwali repertoires, preserving traditional Urdu poetic forms on disc. Her work helped bridge the gap between classical and popular music in post-independence India, and she remained an influential reference for later generations of female vocalists.
