Georges Moustaki (1934–2013) was a French singer-songwriter of Greek-Jewish descent, born in Alexandria, Egypt. He became a leading figure in the French chanson tradition, writing poetic, socially conscious songs that were recorded by Édith Piaf, Yves Montand and others before he launched his own performing career in the late 1960s. His best-known compositions include the international hit “Milord” (for Piaf) and his own signature song “Le Métèque.” Moustaki’s gentle voice and literate lyrics blended Mediterranean influences with the classic French cabaret style, earning him lasting popularity across Europe and the French-speaking world.
