Bio
Vinícius de Moraes (1913–1980) was a Brazilian poet, lyricist, and diplomat whose words helped define bossa nova and modern Brazilian popular music. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he began his career as a poet and film critic before turning to songwriting in the 1950s. His collaborations with Antônio Carlos Jobim produced classics such as “Garota de Ipanema” (“The Girl from Ipanema”), while his partnership with Baden Powell yielded the Afro-samba series. Moraes’s concise, lyrical style bridged literature and popular song, leaving a lasting influence on MPB and Brazilian jazz.
