Johnny Hodges (1907–1970) was an American alto saxophonist whose warm, lyrical tone made him one of the most distinctive voices in jazz. He joined Duke Ellington’s orchestra in 1928 and remained its star soloist for four decades, shaping the band’s sound on classics such as “Jeep’s Blues,” “I Got It Bad (and That Ain’t Good),” and “In a Sentimental Mood.” Beyond Ellington, Hodges led small-group sessions that showcased his ballad style and blues-inflected phrasing, influencing generations of saxophonists. His work bridged swing and cool jazz, and his recordings remain touchstones of the genre.
