Arthur Sullivan

Bio

Arthur Sullivan (1842–1900) was an English composer best known for his fourteen comic operas written in collaboration with librettist W. S. Gilbert. Their works, including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado, became cornerstones of the English musical-theatre repertoire and remain widely performed today. Beyond the Savoy operas, Sullivan composed orchestral music, hymns such as “Onward, Christian Soldiers,” and the song “The Lost Chord.” He also served as a conductor and teacher, helping to raise the standard of British music-making in the late Victorian era.
