Marguerite Monnot

Marguerite Monnot (1903–1961) was a French composer and pianist whose career centered on popular song and musical theater. Born in Decize, she studied piano at the Paris Conservatoire and began writing music for films and revues in the 1930s. She is best known for her long collaboration with singer Édith Piaf, composing many of Piaf’s signature songs including “Hymne à l’amour,” “Milord,” and “Mon Manège à Moi.” Monnot also contributed scores to stage works such as the musical “Irma La Douce,” which later reached international audiences. Her catalog remains a cornerstone of mid-20th-century French chanson, preserved through continued recordings and performances of her best-known melodies.
