Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920–1995) was an Italian pianist renowned for his exceptional technical precision and refined interpretations of the classical and Romantic repertoire. Born in Brescia, he studied at the Milan Conservatory and quickly gained international recognition after winning the Geneva International Music Competition in 1939. Michelangeli was celebrated for his meticulous attention to detail, crystalline tone, and ability to convey both structural clarity and poetic nuance in works by composers such as Debussy, Ravel, Beethoven, and Chopin. Despite a relatively small discography, his recordings—particularly those of Debussy’s Images and Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit—are regarded as benchmarks of 20th-century pianism. Throughout his career, Michelangeli maintained an aura of exclusivity, performing infrequently and often canceling concerts, which only heightened his mystique. He also devoted significant time to teaching, influencing a generation of pianists with his uncompromising standards and profound musical insight.
