Lila Downs is a Mexican singer-songwriter and actress whose music blends traditional Mexican folk styles such as son jarocho, mariachi, and trova with contemporary Latin alternative elements. Born in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, in 1968, she grew up immersed in the indigenous Mixtec culture of her mother and the American influences of her father, shaping a bilingual repertoire that often addresses social justice, indigenous rights, and migration. Downs first gained international recognition in the late 1990s with albums like "La Sandunga" and "Tree of Life," which showcased her powerful voice and eclectic arrangements.
