Bio
John Tavener (1944–2013) was a British composer whose music is noted for its spiritual depth and minimalist textures. Born in Wembley, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music and first gained wide attention with his cantata The Whale (1968). Much of his later work drew on Eastern Orthodox liturgy and chant, producing contemplative pieces such as The Protecting Veil and Song for Athene, the latter performed at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. Tavener’s catalogue spans choral, orchestral, and chamber genres, often combining modal harmony with extended silences and slow-moving lines. He received numerous commissions from major ensembles and festivals, and his music continues to be performed internationally.
