Bio

Peter Schreier (1935–2019) was a German tenor and conductor renowned for his performances of Bach, Mozart, and Schubert. Born in Meissen, he studied at the Dresden Kreuzchor and the Hochschule für Musik Dresden before making his operatic debut in 1959. Schreier became one of the leading lyric tenors of his generation, appearing regularly at the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Salzburg Festival. Beyond opera, Schreier was celebrated for his interpretation of German lieder and oratorio, especially the Evangelist roles in Bach’s Passions. He also conducted many of the ensembles with which he sang, including the Staatskapelle Dresden. His extensive discography spans more than five decades and remains a benchmark for classical vocal recordings.
