Bio
Candi Staton is an American soul and gospel singer born in Hanceville, Alabama, in 1940. She began her career in the late 1950s as a backing vocalist for the Jewel Gospel Trio before transitioning to secular R&B in the late 1960s. Staton achieved her greatest commercial success in the 1970s with hits such as "Young Hearts Run Free" and "Stand Up and Be a Witness," establishing herself as a prominent voice in Southern soul. In the 1980s, Staton returned to her gospel roots, releasing several acclaimed albums in that genre. She has continued to record and perform into the 21st century, receiving multiple Grammy nominations for both her soul and gospel work. Her distinctive voice and ability to bridge secular and sacred music have made her a lasting figure in American popular music.
