Roy Hargrove (1969–2018) was an American jazz trumpeter and composer whose work bridged hard bop, Latin jazz, and soul-inflected grooves. Born in Waco, Texas, he rose to prominence in the late 1980s and 1990s, collaborating with legends such as Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra while leading his own quintet and the funk-oriented Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor. Hargrove’s warm, vocal-like tone and rhythmic precision earned him two Grammy Awards and a lasting influence on contemporary jazz. He continued to record and tour until his death in 2018, leaving a catalog that spans straight-ahead acoustic sessions and cross-genre explorations.
