Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887–1959) was a Brazilian composer, conductor, cellist, and classical guitarist whose prolific output helped define a distinctly Brazilian voice in 20th-century concert music. Blending European forms with indigenous and popular idioms, he created works such as the nine Bachianas Brasileiras and the fourteen Chôros that remain cornerstones of the Latin-American repertoire. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Villa-Lobos traveled widely through Brazil’s interior, absorbing folk melodies and rhythms that later permeated his scores. After early studies in cello and guitar, he spent time in Paris in the 1920s, where his music attracted international attention while he remained committed to promoting Brazilian musical culture at home. Returning to Brazil, he held influential posts in education and founded the Brazilian Academy of Music. His catalog exceeds two thousand works, spanning symphonies, concertos, chamber music, operas, and an extensive body of guitar pieces that continue to be performed worldwide.
