Johnny Hallyday (1943–2017) was a French singer, songwriter, and actor whose career spanned more than five decades. Often called the "French Elvis," he became a central figure in French popular music, blending rock and roll with chanson and variété française. Hallyday released over 1,000 songs and sold more than 110 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists in French history. Born Jean-Philippe Léo Smet in Paris, he adopted the stage name Johnny Hallyday early in his career. His energetic performances and distinctive voice helped popularize rock music in France during the 1960s.
