Bio

Simon Preston (1938–2022) was an English organist, conductor and composer whose career spanned more than six decades. Trained at King’s College, Cambridge, he became sub-organist at Westminster Abbey before serving as organist and master of the choristers at Christ Church, Oxford (1970–1981) and then returning to Westminster Abbey in the same role (1981–1987). Preston was celebrated for his authoritative performances of Baroque repertoire—especially the works of J. S. Bach—as well as for his extensive discography of choral and organ music on labels such as Decca, Deutsche Grammophon and Hyperion. He also composed choral and organ pieces and maintained an active international recital and recording schedule until his retirement.
