Bob James is an American jazz keyboardist, arranger, and producer born in Marshall, Missouri, in 1939. He first gained prominence in the 1970s with a series of CTI Records albums that blended jazz, funk, and pop sensibilities, establishing him as a leading figure in the emerging smooth-jazz movement. Beyond his solo work, James has been a prolific session musician and collaborator, contributing to recordings by artists such as Quincy Jones, Paul Simon, and Grover Washington Jr. His compositions, including the widely sampled "Nautilus," have influenced hip-hop and electronic music, while his long-running partnership with Fourplay helped define contemporary jazz-fusion in the 1990s and 2000s.
