Hildegard Knef was a German actress, singer, and writer whose career spanned more than five decades. Born in Ulm in 1925, she first gained international attention as a film actress in the late 1940s before establishing herself as a distinctive voice in German popular music. Her recordings, which ranged from early post-war ballads to later schlager and neue deutsche welle material, were marked by a deep, smoky vocal style and often introspective lyrics. Beyond her work on stage and screen, Knef authored several autobiographical books that became best-sellers in Germany. She remained active in both music and literature until her death in 2002, leaving a legacy as one of the most versatile and enduring figures in German entertainment.
