Bio
Valery Gergiev is a Russian conductor born in Moscow in 1953. He studied at the Leningrad Conservatory and rose to prominence as principal conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, where he has served as artistic director since 1988. Gergiev is known for his intense, dynamic interpretations of Russian repertoire, particularly the works of Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich, as well as his advocacy for contemporary composers. He has also held major international posts including principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Munich Philharmonic. Gergiev has recorded extensively for Decca and Mariinsky's own label, and he founded the Stars of the White Nights festival.
