Rufus Wainwright is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter and composer known for his lush, theatrical style and classical influences. Born in Rhinebeck, New York, in 1973, he grew up in a musical family—his father is folk musician Loudon Wainwright III and his mother is singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle. His work spans pop, opera, and art song, often featuring rich orchestration and introspective lyrics. Wainwright first gained attention with his self-titled debut album in 1998, followed by acclaimed releases such as Poses and Want One. He has composed operas including Prima Donna and Hadrian, and has collaborated with artists across genres.
