Bio

Talat Mahmood (1924–1998) was an Indian playback singer and ghazal vocalist whose soft, romantic baritone made him one of the most distinctive voices in mid-century Hindi cinema. Born in Lucknow, he began performing on All India Radio before moving to Bombay in the late 1940s, where he lent his voice to numerous films while also maintaining a parallel career singing ghazals and light-classical pieces. Over four decades he recorded thousands of film and non-film songs, becoming especially admired for his restrained, emotion-laden phrasing. Although his film assignments declined after the 1960s, his ghazal albums and live concerts kept his reputation alive, and his work continues to be reissued and celebrated by later generations of listeners.
