Bio
José van Dam is a Belgian operatic bass-baritone born in Ixelles on 25 August 1940. He studied at the Brussels Conservatory and made his professional debut in 1961 at the Paris Opera, quickly establishing himself as one of the leading bass-baritones of his generation. His repertoire spans the major roles of the French, German and Italian operatic literature, with acclaimed portrayals of characters such as Escamillo, Wozzeck and Golaud. Van Dam has appeared at the world’s foremost opera houses, including La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera and the Vienna State Opera, and has collaborated with conductors such as Karajan, Solti and Boulez. In addition to his stage work, he has recorded extensively for major labels and is noted for his clear diction and expressive phrasing. He has also taught at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Waterloo, mentoring young singers.
