Lili Boulanger

Bio

Lili Boulanger was a French composer born in Paris in 1893. Despite her short life, she made a significant impact on early 20th-century music, becoming the first woman to win the Prix de Rome composition prize in 1913. Her works are characterized by impressionistic harmonies and innovative orchestration, reflecting the influence of her teacher Gabriel Fauré. Boulanger composed a wide range of music including songs, choral works, and orchestral pieces. Notable compositions include her cantata "Faust et Hélène," the song cycle "Clairières dans le ciel," and the symphonic poem "D'un matin de printemps." Her music often explores themes of spirituality and nature. She died in 1918 at the age of 24, leaving behind a small but influential body of work that continues to be performed and studied today. Her sister, Nadia Boulanger, became a renowned music teacher who helped preserve and promote Lili's compositions.
