Bio

Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Born in Hamburg in 1809 into a prominent Jewish family that later converted to Christianity, he showed prodigious talent from childhood. He revived interest in the music of J.S. Bach, conducted the first performance of the St. Matthew Passion since Bach’s death, and composed the overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream while still a teenager. His major works include five symphonies, the violin concerto in E minor, and numerous chamber pieces and oratorios such as Elijah. Mendelssohn served as conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and helped found the Leipzig Conservatory. He died in Leipzig in 1847 at age 38.
