Bio
Carl Nielsen was a Danish composer, conductor, and violinist born in 1865 on the island of Funen. He rose from rural origins to become Denmark’s most celebrated composer of the late-Romantic and early-modern eras. His six symphonies, concertos for flute, clarinet and violin, and extensive chamber and vocal works established a distinct Nordic voice that balanced folk-inflected melodies with bold harmonic experimentation. Nielsen served as conductor of the Royal Danish Orchestra and taught at the Copenhagen Conservatory, influencing generations of Scandinavian musicians. His operas Saul og David and Maskarade remain cornerstones of Danish national repertoire. He died in Copenhagen in 1931.
