George Szell (1897–1970) was a Hungarian-born conductor, pianist, and composer who became a leading figure in American orchestral music. After early studies in Vienna and Berlin, he held posts in Europe before emigrating to the United States in 1939. He is best remembered for his long tenure as music director of the Cleveland Orchestra (1946–1970), during which he transformed the ensemble into one of the world’s most disciplined and virtuosic orchestras. Szell’s conducting was noted for its clarity, structural rigor, and attention to detail. He championed both the core Austro-German repertoire and contemporary works, and he frequently appeared as a pianist in concerto performances. His recordings with the Cleveland Orchestra remain benchmarks for many symphonic works.
