Portishead are an English band formed in 1991 in Bristol, consisting of vocalist Beth Gibbons, producer Geoff Barrow, and guitarist Adrian Utley. They are widely credited with helping to define the trip-hop genre, blending elements of jazz, hip-hop, and 1960s film soundtracks into a dark, atmospheric sound. Their debut album Dummy (1994) received critical acclaim and won the Mercury Prize, establishing the band as a major force in alternative music. Portishead's music is characterized by Gibbons' haunting vocals, Barrow's innovative production, and a cinematic quality that has influenced countless artists across genres.
