Bio

César Franck (1822–1890) was a Belgian-born French composer, pianist, and organist whose music bridged late-Romanticism and early Impressionism. Trained at the Liège and Paris Conservatoires, he became organist at Sainte-Clotilde in Paris, where his improvisations and teaching profoundly influenced a generation of French musicians. Franck’s major works include the Symphony in D minor, the Violin Sonata, and the Piano Quintet, all marked by cyclic form and rich chromatic harmony. Though his output was modest, his emphasis on thematic unity and expressive depth helped lay the groundwork for later French composers such as Debussy and Ravel.
