Cécile Chaminade

Bio

Cécile Chaminade (1857–1944) was a French composer and pianist whose career spanned the late-Romantic era. Born in Paris, she studied privately with leading teachers and began composing in her teens. Her output includes over 400 works, notably piano pieces, songs, and the Concertstück for piano and orchestra. Chaminade toured extensively as a pianist, performing her own compositions across Europe and the United States. Her salon-style miniatures, such as the “Scarf Dance,” gained wide popularity and were staples of the domestic repertoire. She was the first female composer elected to the Légion d’Honneur. Despite her commercial success, Chaminade’s larger-scale works received limited attention after her death. Renewed interest in women composers has led to modern recordings and performances of her symphonic and chamber music, securing her place in the classical canon.
