Bio
Hector Berlioz (1803–1869) was a French composer whose innovative orchestration and dramatic sensibility helped shape the Romantic era. Born in La Côte-Saint-André, he studied medicine before turning to music, eventually entering the Paris Conservatoire where he developed a highly personal style. His best-known works include the Symphonie fantastique, Harold en Italie, and the opera Les Troyens. Berlioz also wrote influential treatises on orchestration and conducting, and he championed the music of Beethoven, Gluck, and Weber throughout his career.
