Bio
Tarquinio Merula (1595–1665) was an Italian composer, organist, and violinist active during the early Baroque period. Born in Busseto, he held posts in Poland, Bergamo, and Cremona, where he contributed significantly to the development of instrumental and sacred music. His output includes numerous masses, motets, madrigals, and innovative trio sonatas that blend Renaissance polyphony with emerging Baroque idioms. Merula’s works are noted for their expressive melodies and idiomatic writing for strings and continuo.
