Bio

Stanley Clarke is an American bassist, composer, and bandleader born in Philadelphia in 1951. He rose to prominence in the 1970s as a founding member of the jazz-fusion group Return to Forever alongside Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and others. Clarke is widely recognized for his virtuosic technique on both acoustic and electric bass and for helping to elevate the bass guitar to a solo instrument in jazz contexts. Throughout his career, Clarke has released numerous solo albums blending jazz, funk, and fusion, including the landmark School Days (1976). He has collaborated with a wide range of artists across genres and remains an influential figure in contemporary jazz and jazz-fusion.
