Bio

Johannes Brahms was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the Romantic period, born in Hamburg in 1833. He spent much of his career in Vienna, where he became a central figure in 19th-century classical music. Brahms is celebrated for his symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and choral works, including the German Requiem. He was a close friend of Robert and Clara Schumann and maintained a rigorous, self-critical approach to composition. His music bridges Classical forms with Romantic expressiveness and influenced later composers such as Schoenberg and Dvořák.
