Jiří Bělohlávek

Jiří Bělohlávek (1946–2017) was a Czech conductor renowned for his deep affinity with the music of his homeland and for his authoritative interpretations of Czech composers such as Dvořák, Janáček, Martinů, and Smetana. After studying cello and conducting at the Prague Conservatory and the Academy of Performing Arts, he rose to prominence as chief conductor of the Prague Symphony Orchestra and later the Czech Philharmonic, where he served two separate tenures and championed both the core repertoire and contemporary Czech works. Internationally, Bělohlávek held positions with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and he appeared regularly with leading ensembles including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. His extensive discography, much of it recorded for Supraphon and Chandos, earned critical acclaim for its clarity, rhythmic vitality, and idiomatic phrasing, securing his reputation as one of the foremost exponents of Czech orchestral music in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
