Benedetto Marcello (1686–1739) was an Italian composer, writer, advocate, and teacher of the late Baroque era. Born into a noble Venetian family, he received a broad education in law and the humanities before turning seriously to music. He served as a magistrate in various Venetian territories while composing cantatas, oratorios, concertos, and keyboard works that circulated widely in manuscript and print. His most celebrated publication, Estro poetico-armonico (1724–1726), comprises eight volumes of psalm paraphrases set for one to four voices and continuo; the collection remained a model of expressive sacred music throughout the eighteenth century. Marcello also wrote the satirical pamphlet Il teatro alla moda, which lampooned contemporary operatic practices. Today he is remembered for a refined, contrapuntally assured style that bridges the late Baroque and the emerging galant aesthetic.
