Marc Almond is an English singer and songwriter best known as the frontman of the 1980s synthpop duo Soft Cell. Born in Southport in 1957, he rose to international fame with the 1981 hit "Tainted Love," which topped charts worldwide and became one of the best-selling singles of the decade. After Soft Cell disbanded, Almond pursued a solo career that blended cabaret, torch songs, and experimental pop, releasing acclaimed albums such as "Mother Fist and Her Five Daughters" and "Tenement Symphony." Throughout his career, Almond has collaborated with artists ranging from Gene Pitney to Siouxsie Sioux and has maintained a distinctive theatrical stage presence. His work often explores themes of love, loss, and outsider identity, drawing on influences from glam, punk, and European chanson. He continues to record and perform, remaining an influential figure in British alternative music.
