Bio

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875–1912) was a British composer and conductor of mixed English and Sierra Leonean descent. He studied at the Royal College of Music under Charles Villiers Stanford and gained early recognition for his cantata Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast (1898), which established his reputation both in Britain and the United States. His catalogue includes orchestral works, chamber music, songs, and choral pieces that often drew on African and African-American spiritual themes. Coleridge-Taylor conducted major orchestras, championed Black musical traditions, and was regarded as one of the leading British composers of his generation before his early death at age 37.
