Bio

André Cluytens (1905–1967) was a Belgian-born French conductor renowned for his authoritative interpretations of French orchestral and operatic repertoire. After early training in Antwerp, he moved to France, where he held principal posts at the Opéra de Lyon and the Paris Opéra-Comique before becoming music director of the Théâtre National de l’Opéra in 1944. Internationally, Cluytens gained prominence through his long association with the Vienna Philharmonic and his acclaimed recordings for EMI, notably the first complete stereo cycle of Debussy’s orchestral works and a benchmark set of the Beethoven symphonies. His refined yet dramatic style also extended to Russian and German repertoire, leaving a legacy preserved on numerous monaural and stereo discs.
