Walter Wanderley

Bio

Walter Wanderley (1932–1986) was a Brazilian organist, pianist, and composer whose work helped popularize bossa nova and Brazilian jazz internationally. Born in Recife, he moved to Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s and became a sought-after session musician, recording with artists such as João Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto. In 1966 he relocated to the United States, where his Hammond-organ-driven albums for Verve and A&M Records—most notably “Rain Forest”—introduced American audiences to a fusion of bossa rhythms, exotica, and easy-listening jazz. Wanderley’s distinctive sound remained influential in both Latin-jazz and lounge-music circles until his death in 1986.
