Bio
Murray Perahia is an American pianist and conductor born in New York City in 1947. He studied at the Mannes College of Music and rose to prominence after winning the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1972. Perahia is celebrated for his refined interpretations of Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Schubert, and he served as co-artistic director of the Aldeburgh Festival with Sir Peter Pears and later with Sir Colin Davis. He has recorded extensively for Sony Classical, earning multiple Grammy Awards, and is noted for his long-standing collaboration with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. Despite a hand injury that sidelined him in the 1990s, he returned to the concert stage with renewed acclaim and continues to perform and record.
