Samuel Barber (1910–1981) was an American composer whose lyrical, emotionally direct style placed him among the leading figures of 20th-century classical music. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, he studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and quickly gained recognition with works such as the Adagio for Strings, which became one of the most frequently performed pieces of American concert music. Barber’s catalogue spans orchestral, choral, piano, and operatic genres. His music often fuses late-Romantic expressiveness with a distinctly American sensibility, as heard in the Piano Concerto, the opera Vanessa, and the Knoxville: Summer of 1915 for soprano and orchestra. Despite the rise of more experimental trends during his lifetime, Barber remained committed to tonal clarity and melodic richness, earning him both popular acclaim and critical respect.
