Bio
Stephen Sondheim (1930–2021) was an American composer and lyricist whose work transformed the modern musical theater. Born in New York City, he studied with composer Milton Babbitt and began his Broadway career as lyricist for West Side Story (1957) and Gypsy (1959). Over six decades he created both music and lyrics for landmark shows including Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods, known for their sophisticated scores and psychologically complex characters. His influence extended beyond the stage through film adaptations, cast recordings, and revivals that continue to shape contemporary musical theater. Sondheim received numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Kennedy Center Honor, and his scores remain central to the American songbook.
