Bio

Sir Adrian Boult (1889–1983) was a leading English conductor whose career spanned more than six decades. He studied at the Royal College of Music and in Leipzig before becoming the first conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 1924. Boult later served as music director of the BBC Symphony Orchestra (1930–1950) and the London Philharmonic Orchestra (1951–1958), shaping both ensembles into internationally respected ensembles. Renowned for his clear technique and advocacy of British music, Boult gave numerous premieres of works by Vaughan Williams, Holst, and Elgar. After stepping down from full-time posts he continued to record extensively, producing a distinguished legacy of interpretations of the core orchestral repertoire that remains widely available today.
