Rachid Taha

Bio

Rachid Taha (1958–2018) was an Algerian singer and songwriter who became one of the leading voices of the French raï scene. Born in Sig, Algeria, he moved to France as a teenager and rose to prominence in the 1980s with his band Carte de Séjour before launching a solo career that blended traditional raï and gnawa rhythms with rock, punk, and electronic elements. Taha’s music often addressed themes of immigration, identity, and cultural fusion, earning him both critical acclaim and commercial success across Europe and North Africa. His 1998 cover of “Ya Rayah” and the 2004 hit “Rock El Casbah” (with Mick Jones and Brian Eno) are among his best-known recordings. Over a career spanning four decades, Taha released more than a dozen studio albums and collaborated with artists ranging from Khaled to Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He remained an outspoken advocate for immigrant rights and cultural diversity until his death in Paris in 2018.
