Rakim is an American rapper widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in hip hop. Born William Michael Griffin Jr. in Wyandanch, New York, he first gained prominence as one half of the duo Eric B. & Rakim, whose 1987 debut album Paid in Full helped redefine the art of MCing with its intricate rhyme schemes and jazz-infused production. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Rakim’s precise flow, internal rhymes, and calm delivery set new standards for lyricism, influencing generations of artists.
