He first gained international recognition as a member of the influential electronic trio Yellow Magic Orchestra before establishing a solo career that blended pop, experimental, and orchestral styles. Sakamoto composed numerous film scores, including the Academy Award-winning soundtrack for The Last Emperor (1987).
