Bio
Iona Brown (1941–2004) was an English violinist and conductor renowned for her work with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. Born in Salisbury, she studied violin in Brussels and London before joining the Academy as a violinist in 1964. She became its director in 1974, leading the ensemble in numerous recordings and international tours. Brown specialized in Baroque and Classical repertoire, particularly concertos, and was noted for her precise and expressive playing. She also appeared as a soloist with major orchestras and conducted other ensembles. Her recordings, especially of Vivaldi and Bach, remain widely regarded.
