Sam Cooke was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur who became one of the most influential figures in the transition from gospel to secular soul music. Rising to fame in the 1950s with hits like "You Send Me" and "A Change Is Gonna Come," he blended smooth vocals with socially conscious lyrics, helping to shape the sound of modern soul and R&B. Cooke also founded his own record label and publishing company, paving the way for greater artistic control among Black musicians in the industry.
