Alton Ellis

Bio

Alton Ellis (1938–2008) was a Jamaican singer and songwriter widely regarded as one of the originators of rocksteady. Born in Trenchtown, Kingston, he began his career in the early 1960s with ska hits such as “Dance Crasher” and “Girl I’ve Got a Date,” then helped define the slower, more soulful rocksteady sound with classics like “I’m Still in Love with You.” Throughout the late 1960s and 1970s Ellis recorded extensively for producers including Duke Reid, Bunny Lee, and Sonia Pottinger, releasing enduring tracks such as “Mad, Mad, Mad” and “Black Man’s Pride.” His smooth tenor and socially conscious lyrics bridged ska, rocksteady, and early roots reggae, influencing generations of Jamaican artists. Ellis spent much of his later life in Canada and the United Kingdom, where he continued to perform and record until his death in 2008. His catalog remains a cornerstone of Jamaican popular music.
