Bio
Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in 1968. They are considered pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, though their musical style has varied over the years. The band achieved their commercial breakthrough with the 1970 album Deep Purple in Rock, which featured the hit single "Black Night" and the instrumental "Speed King". Their 1972 single "Smoke on the Water" became one of the most recognizable rock songs ever recorded. The classic Mark II lineup of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice produced the band's most successful work, including the albums Machine Head (1972) and Made in Japan (1972). Deep Purple were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, and they remain one of the best-selling rock bands of all time with over 100 million records sold worldwide.
