Joan Baez is an American singer-songwriter and activist whose clear soprano voice and distinctive guitar style helped define the folk revival of the 1960s. She first gained national attention with her 1960 debut album and soon became known for interpreting traditional ballads alongside contemporary protest songs. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Baez has recorded more than thirty studio albums, collaborated with artists ranging from Bob Dylan to the Grateful Dead, and remained a prominent voice for civil rights, peace, and humanitarian causes.
